Samantha is a Social Worker, Holistic Health Coach and Private Chef committed to supporting you in living your healthiest and happiest life. Food has always been such an important part of my life. Some of my happiest memories growing up were the times I spent cooking with my dad, usually spinach pie and carrot soup for Thanksgiving. On special occasions, we would forgo our usual frozen dinners and my mom would show me how to stir-fry broccoli with soy sauce, garlic and sherry wine. Preparing food always seemed like something special and magical to me. My dad and I always talked about opening a restaurant, but I decided to pursue a career in social work instead. Even though I was employed in social work, I always managed to bring food into the picture. I was a school director for a culinary arts training program for homeless veterans, ran a food pantry and started farmers markets in areas where fresh fruits and vegetables were hard to find. In my late 20s, I started getting sick. It started with an allergic reaction to a medication I was prescribed for what my doctor thought was a yeast infection (without doing any labs). That progressed to IBS, chronic cutaneous yeast, and all types of secondary skin infections. I saw every type of doctor and specialist and tried all kinds of alternative therapies and tests, but nothing seemed to work. I had a feeling that food was going to be part of my healing, but I couldn’t figure out exactly how. I saw a nutritionist who told me to eat protein bars (even though they had tons of sugar) and avoid whole grains, and when I mentioned to my doctor that I was cutting out fruit and grains because I thought it would help, she told me that I shouldn’t restrict what I was eating since I was already a vegetarian. I finally saw a naturopathic doctor and changed my diet. I had been eating a whole foods diet for years at that point, but I had such a sweet tooth! Through his help, I was able to stop taking all the medication I was on. I stopped eating all fruit, starchy vegetables and grains. I also focused on eating as many greens as possible. I have been free of medication for more than four years. In 2014 I was diagnosed with endometriosis. This only reaffirmed my commitment to healing through food. I’m also learning how to find balance in my life and my diet. Listening to my true calling in life and taking risks to do so has been another part of my journey. Around the same time of my diagnosis, I quit my full time job as a social worker. Now I cook weekly meals for people with dietary restrictions, cook for yoga retreats, and work at the Natural Gourmet Institute (an amazing health supportive culinary school). I also continue to work with private clients who are struggling with their health. Helping people feel good in their bodies and confident in how they live their lives is such a gift. I feel so lucky to be able to be there for people during their darker times. I truly think everything happens for a reason, and now I can see how getting sick was a blessing in disguise that has led me to where I am now in my life… living my passion.
