I was put on medication and was able to get it under control fairly quickly. However, since then, I’ve had 3 serious flare ups. The most serious was when I was studying abroad in Italy. My doctors had always told me that there was no correlation between diet and UC (which seemed crazy to me), but I took it on good faith and ate all the bread, pasta, and gelato I could get my hands on.When I got back to the US, I was anemic and was put on a high dose of Prednisone for 3 months (and had to deal with all of the fun side effects that came along with it, hello, insomnia, weight gain, and loose teeth!). I also completely changed my diet and was able to figure out which foods really affected me. This was a real wake up call and made me realize that by monitoring my diet, I had a tremendous amount of control over my colitis. Since then I’ve learned which foods work for me and how to alter my diet when I feel a flare up coming on in order to minimize if effectively.
