My Story

i graduated from a very demanding 4 year naturopathic program from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM)  in 2005. I also was 5 months pregnant with my first child at the time. My adrenal glands were drained. While the cortisol they secrete in response to stress is protective in small amounts, the continuous stress of being a pregnant intern studying for finals and board exams kept them harmfully busy. They needed some support. With the right supplements, herbs and dietary choices I was able to get back on track.

I encountered a hormonal issue again after my third pregnancy. I was juggling the demands of 3 small children and my busy naturopathic practice. About 8 months after my third child was born, I was feeling very tired, which i know is a very common complaint of sleep deprived moms, but I also had quite a bit of hair loss, an unusual symptom for me. Even though I knew this could be a normal maternal hormone shift, I felt something else was going on and wanted to have my thyroid gland assessed. My medical doctor preformed appropriate tests and we discovered my TSH was quite high.
The endocrine system is tightly regulated, meaning the female, adrenal and thyroid hormones all work together. I had many stressors; new baby, lack of sleep, 2 young children and my naturoapthic practice. With the help of another ND, we decided the root of my thyroid issue was likely the adrenals and started treating that system. Thankfully, there are so many ways to treat the adrenals. I focused on nourishing and nutrient dense foods, supplements, herbal remedies, and yoga. I re-tested my thyroid 3 months later and it was already improving. I still continue with a basic regime of supplements and herbs but really  focus on nutrient dense foods to support my whole body. I also need food preparation to be quick and simple as my days are filled with my kids and work!

My story continues with my daughter. She was having such terrible stomach pains that she would shriek in pain more than once each week. Being a naturopathic doctor, I started her on the basics: probiotics, vitamin D, fish oils, etc. When she wasn’t improving, I thought her problems might be a result of something she was eating. I tested her for food allergies with an IgG blood test. It came back with a sensitivity to eggs. Right then, we eliminated all forms of eggs and she has been pain free ever since.

I myself have eaten a vegetarian diet for 20 years. It started with my own digestive issues — I could not digest animal products. I have always baked vegan goods, so eliminating eggs for my daughter was not difficult for me.

As a working mother with three kids, I know how busy life can be. My goal is to inspire people to get healthy with healthy meals that are quick and simple that the whole family can enjoy.
