I persisted, and eventually found out I was intolerant to nearly 80 foods, mainly grains, dairy, legumes, nightshades, egg white and certain fruits, nuts, seeds and some shellfish. I cut out many of the culprits and noticed the difference almost immediately. But the good times didn’t last and during the summer of 2011, I began getting stabbing pains in my stomach worse than I ever felt before. My doctor kept prescribing IBS medication but none of it worked. Through my insistence, I was sent for tests and it transpired that I had the autoimmune condition, crohn’s disease. I was put on steroids and immunosuppressant drugs and was told that food had no effect on my condition. I decided that I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life on medications so I started what’s been a three year journey of getting to know myself. A naturopath advised me to heal my gut, which involved stabilizing blood sugar and inflammation. I researched how others had healed their crohn’s through diets and found that most alternative diets promoted eating healing, whole foods with an emphasis on nutrient density, elimination of all processed foods, and very little added sugars. No one diet fits all but mine has worked for me so far. I’m happy to say that three years later, I am now on lower doses of medication, I have no nutrient deficiencies, and I have more energy now than I did in my teens! You can follow Suzanne on Instagram @AHealthyHappyGlow
