I Healed My MS Naturally. Now I’m “Taking It To The Streets”

Diane V Capaldi is on a mission to change the world and everyone’s perspective on life and attitude, one road trip and one meal at a time. A former chef and business entrepeneur who also suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Capaldi, better known as The PaleoBOSS Lady, is currently on a multi-year road trip across America to spreading her message of empowerment, healthy living and healing with food. In her award-winning “Taking It To The Streets” Tour, PaleoBOSS Lady is going from town to town, and house to house, sharing her inspirational story of hope through lectures and cooking demonstrations. Here she talks about how she healed her chronic illness with dietary changes and how she’s taking this message of Food As Medicine to the streets of America . My life has been all about being a BOSS. From being raised in a dysfunctional family that included an addicted mom and a war hero father (who suffered from untreated PTSD), chaos had always been the norm in my life. By age 23, after being told that I had an inoperable brain tumor, I spent the next six months believing my life was ending. As luck would have it, my death sentence became a life sentence when it was not a tumor, but instead Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It hasn’t been easy, but today I am one of the most-healed individuals from secondary progressive MS that is known in the world. I’ve said goodbye to my fear-driven life, and today I am not defined by MS. Some could call me a miracle. But the truth is, I cured my MS naturally through the Paleo diet and a complete change in attitude and lifestyle. Now, I am traveling the country in my “Taking It To The Streets” Tour; my mission is to share my story and give hope to anyone struggling with a chronic illness. Life Before Healing My journey hasn’t been easy, and it didn’t happen right away. I originally tried living “despite” my MS diagnosis, but it didn’t work. I ended up becoming legally disabled as a result of the effects of MS on my body. This happened even though I had devoted part of my life to fundraising for MS research. I was even a test patient for the first-ever disease-modifying drugs used to treat MS. In that trial, I gave myself injections for more than 19 years. In the end, it didn’t help. To make life even more chaotic, my second husband left me as I was learning that my illness had moved onto secondary progressive MS. Eventually, things were out of control, and I was incredibly desperate. By this time, I had lost bilateral use of my hands, which is the highest form of disability a person can have, developed issues swallowing, which is what kills many of those who are living with MS, and I needed live-in help. To make matters worse, I had spent my life savings on my own healthcare costs. I was facing homelessness or institutionalization, and I even considered ending my life. I was living with Multiple Sclerosis, and MS was winning. From Toxic Lifestyle To Healthy: How I Changed My Life Right when I was running out of time and options on what to do, my friends arranged for me to go to the Burning Man gathering. While there, I prayed and worked hard to find the answer to my challenges, and one day it came to me: my life was completely toxic. I knew I had to make a lot of changes, and for starters I needed to look within my own life-including my family and relationships with others. I spent the next year literally questioning everything and everyone in my life. In addition to my regular mindfulness, I added in daily yoga, started dancing to start my day and tried to do a lot of self-care. While these things all helped to heal my mind, unfortunately, physically, MS was still calling the shots. Out of desperation, I started looking to diet to heal my multiple sclerosis, and the types of food I was eating. First I cut out gluten, and wow! Within 20 days, my body already felt so much better-all the involuntary limb jumping I had been experiencing came to an end and never returned to this day! I knew I was on to something. As I was researching more about using diet to heal multiple sclerosis and other diseases, I came across a TEDx Talk by Dr. Terry Wahls, called Minding Your Mitochondria. I remember it like it was yesterday. For the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful as Dr. Wahls explained that she was also once wheelchair-bound with MS. She developed a protocol that feeds your body at the cellular level, fueling your mitochondria, also known as the powerhouse of your cells. As I watched Dr. Wahls walk across the stage, explaining how she used diet to heal herself from multiple sclerosis, I almost immediately became a “Wahls Warrior,” and my own healing journey began. I began a quest to take one last step of trying to overcome the odds and kick MS to the curb. And it worked! I followed the Dr. Wahls Protocol and made changes through diet and lifestyle that had a dramatic and profound effect on my health! By following the Paleo diet and lifestyle, after one year, I was pain-free, had lost weight and increased energy. I was even able to ride a bike—something I had not thought I would ever be able to do again. And best of all, no more meds. “Taking It To The Streets” Spreading My Message of Hope Since regaining my health, I sold all my possessions, and dedicated myself and my life to building a grassroots change movement. In my “Taking It To The Streets” Tour, I travel the country and live with complete strangers, offering tools of empowerment to help them tap their own miracle statuses all over the country. Some of my messages:
  • Slow, steady, sustainable steps are the magic path to any life change.
  • Food heals! The Paleo diet helped me kick MS to the curb! I truly believe you can heal your body through diet and lifestyle. Food can be just as powerful and effective as medicine. I can teach you my go-to foods and recipes that worked in helping me reclaim my health.
  • Part of healing is believing in yourself and prioritizing your health. Know you too are worthy. You need to care about you above all others, and be prepared to jump and jump and jump until you get yourself where you want to be. For me, it was curing my MS naturally, but your end goal may be something entirely different.
  • Examine your life and eliminate toxic relationships. I had to cut out some toxic family, friends and even a business partner once I realized that they were doing me more harm than good.
  • Add silence to your life. In addition to following a Paleo diet to heal my MS, a daily yoga and meditation practice have fueled my journey. I have been doing yoga religiously for almost 15 years. It does help MS, but yoga can help anyone who practices.
  • Find community to support your path. Community support is a great way to achieve your goals, especially when stress triggers are present.
My healing journey has had so many twists and turns, but now I am strong, healthy and want to share my experience with everyone I meet. In my “Taking It To The Streets Tour,” I am traveling around the country to talk about the amazing power of food in healing. What you eat, and what you don’t eat, can have a miraculous effect on your health! I am so excited to teach those who struggle with chronic illness about healing through diet and the Paleo lifestyle. Believing in yourself can truly help you improve your health! I am ready to share my life and my health-altering and life-changing practices with you. Are you ready to heal yourself? Join me!
