The idea for this recipe came to me the week before the Super Bowl. In our house Super Bowl means football, funny commercials, great time with friends/family and, most importantly, FOOD! This year, I wanted to kick my family’s “tailgate” food up a notch.
The standard tailgate fare of fried chicken wings, 7-layer bean dip, and football-shaped cream cheese (it exists!) is not at all something I can eat without getting extremely sick. To make a more easily digestible menu, I baked the drumsticks instead of frying them. The Indian-inspired spice blend is mighty delicious, yet suitable for those, like me, following a paleo autoimmune protocol (no spicy foods).
Did I mention they’re delicious? And really easy too. Let’s go wow some people.

Deep-fried wings are generally cooked in low-quality vegetable oils, infusing them with saturated fat and unnecessary calories. The high oil content, along with acidic, spicy sauce can often be problematic for sensitive digestive tracts. Coconut oil, on the other hand, is a medium-chain fat that is digested and absorbed more readily and transported directly into the bloodstream for ready use by the body. It is much more likely than other fats to be utilized as opposed to stored.
Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, and helpful for easing digestive distress, as well as being a potent antioxidant. Throwing cardamom in with super bowl snacks, or any other large snack spread, is a great idea, as it has heartburn reducing properties. It’s also great to help ease symptoms associated with IBS, including gas, constipation and is supportive for liver and gallbladder function. Ginger is also a spice known to aid in digestion.
